Day 2

Fort Portal/ Kibale Forest

gorilla-and-chimpanzee-african-safari-trekking

You will be transferred to Kibale Forest After an early morning breakfast. The drive is breathtakingly beautiful, passing through tea plantations and the lush green countryside that characterizes so much of Uganda. You’ll enter a completely different world when you arrive at the forest… some serious monkey business!

Kibale Forest National Park is a dense tropical rainforest located just outside the colonial town of Fort Portal. Because of the severe monkey business here, this park is regarded as one of Uganda’s major highlights. Many primates live here, and a visit to one of the habituated chimp groups is a truly unforgettable experience. The rare red colobus, as well as the black and white colobus, red-tailed monkey, olive baboon, blue monkey, and l’hoest’s monkeys, can all be seen here regularly. Where else would you find a better place to have encounters with nature, smelling the forest and listening to the various sounds? Your safari tent or cottage is surrounded by lush green diversity, home to a plethora of bird and butterfly species.

Day 3

Chimpanzee Tracking & Swamp walk

gorilla-and-chimpanzee-african-safari-trekking

Chimpanzees are our closest because they share 98 per cent of our genes. They are found in 21 African countries, but they are most easily seen in Uganda due to their dense populations. There are approximately 5,000 wild chimps left in Uganda today. The Chimpanzee Trekking experience here takes place on several well-maintained walking trails. There is also a remarkable diversity of other primates, more than any other forest in East Africa. Aside from our adorable cousins, the chimps, there are red colobus, red-tailed guenon, white-nosed monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey, blue monkey, L’Hoest’s monkey, and the black and white colobus monkey. You may also see olive baboons, bush babies, and nocturnal pottos.

The goal of your jungle trek with a professional guide is to have one hour of eye-to-eye contact with the chimps. We cannot guarantee to see them because they are still wild animals, but your chances are excellent.

Your next excursion will take you to the Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary, home to eight primate species, over 200 bird species, and various reptiles. During the 2 to 3 hour walk, you will see many animals, but the highlight will be catching a glimpse of a famous bird, the Great Blue Turaco. KAFRED, a registered community-based organization, runs the sanctuary. As a result of the walk, funds are raised for community development projects including schools and hospitals.

Day 4

To Queen Elizabeth National Park

gorilla-and-chimpanzee-african-safari-trekking

The scenic Queen Elizabeth National Park is located in southwestern Uganda and is frequently included on visitor itineraries. It is the country’s second-largest park, situated at the foot of the majestic Rwenzori Mountain range, next to Lake Edward and Lake George, linked by the Kazinga channel. Few reserves have such a diverse landscape, with savannah, bushland, wetlands, and lush forests. It’s the best time to visit Uganda and explore the Queen Elizabeth National Park’s 200 kilometres of well-maintained game viewing tracks on your first game drive. We recommend that you remain alert and proactive during your game drive to assist the ranger in spotting as many animals as possible.
Marafiki Safari Lodge is set in a one-of-a-kind location and was designed with local materials and fitted by artisans from the community. This lodge provides private safari tents with raised wooden floors and roll-up canvas walls. You can sit comfortably while watching the savannah plains with breathtaking views of the Rwenzori- and Virunga Mountains across the park. With an en-suite open-air shower, you can adequately experience an African sunrise or shower under the stars at night. Enjoy your delectable meals (prepared with fresh and local ingredients) on the restaurant veranda or by the campfire. While on a game drive, a new pool in this beautiful area invites you to cool off after a day of sun.

Kasenyi Safari Camp is an optional upgrade.
For an exclusive and luxurious stay, stay in one of the en-suite safari tents located on the lake rim of Lake Bunyampaka in Queen Elizabeth National Park. This small camp only has four tents, and you may encounter lion pride and other animals during your stay. So keep your eyes peeled while taking in this authentic African experience.

Day 5

Park Game Drive & Boat Safari on the Kazinga Channel

gorilla-and-chimpanzee-african-safari-trekking

You go on a long game drive to catch the sunrise after an early breakfast. The best time for a game drive is in the morning because the African animal kingdom is most active during the golden hours of the first sunlight touching the savannah. You will continue searching for all wildlife, including elephants, buffalo, lions, waterbuck, leopards, Uganda kobs, warthogs, and birds and primates.

Following lunch, you will hear about the Kazinga Channel in a boat safari. Among the many animals who drink or bathe in the waterhole you will find hippos in greater numbers than you can imagine. Expect to see buffaloes, crocodiles, elephants bathing, and birds of all kinds. This will undoubtedly be one of your tour’s highlights. After the boat safari, you will take a game drive back to the lodge.

Lion tracking is an optional activity.
A research trip is a rewarding adventure for visitors who want to get close and personal with wild African fauna. This one-of-a-kind experience allows visitors to actively monitor some of the park’s lions using locator devices. This optional activity costs an additional $100 per person.

Chimp tracking in Kyambura Gorge is an optional activity.
The next morning, you’ll hike through the Kyambura Gorge, the easternmost portion of Queen Elizabeth National Park. This gorge, also known as the “Valley of Apes,” is a world unto itself. It is now home to a diverse wildlife bio-diversity, including a best family safari kenya of 16 chimps and numerous bird species, and is drained by the River Kayambura. The view from the top is spectacular, with a gorge filled with lush green tropical vegetation and an impressive valley in the background. Hiking through the canyon allows you to see chimps and other primates such as red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, baboons, and vervet monkeys. Several forest birds find refuge in this green-riverine forest. Although the chances of seeing chimps are not as good as on official trekking in Kibale or Budongo forest, this landscape is one of the most beautiful in Uganda and is well worth a visit. This optional activity costs an additional $50 per person.

Meals Plan : Breakfast and Dinner

Accommodation is available at the Marafiki Safari Lodge.

Day 6

To Lake Mutanda/ Bwindi Forest

gorilla-and-chimpanzee-african-safari-trekking

After breakfast, you will be driven to Kisoro in Uganda’s south-western region, near the borders of Rwanda and Congo. You pass through a beautiful part of the country known as “the Switzerland of Africa.” You will see beautiful countryside, a bamboo forest, and spectacular views of the Virunga Mountains. You will stop for lunch at a local restaurant along the way (lunch is not inclusive).

Mutanda Lake Resort has one of Uganda’s best views! This lodge offers comfortable accommodation in a unique corner of the country, perched on a peninsula in Lake Mutanda and isolated in the shadow of the Virunga Mountain Range. The Resort is located between Kisoro town, Mgahinga and Bwindi National Parks, making it an ideal base for gorilla trekking, volcano hikers, bird-lovers, and those looking for a secluded magical place in nature. Don’t forget to take advantage of the lake’s Bilharzia-free status, making it safe to swim, paddleboard, or canoe alongside the locals going about their daily business on the lake! The sunsets are breathtaking, so make sure to be on one of the verandas (with a sundowner drink in hand) at that time.

Luxury Cottage is an optional upgrade.
The spacious Luxury Cottages at Mutanda Lake Resort, combined with the tranquil setting and breathtaking views, will make your stay unforgettable. This setting is a beautiful hideaway, with small islands dotting the surrounding lake and a backdrop of misty volcanoes. On a clear night, be mesmerized by the starry sky from your private veranda and enjoy total relaxation.

Day 7

Gorilla Tracking

gorilla-and-chimpanzee-african-safari-trekking

Following an early morning breakfast, you will set out on an encounter with one of Bwindi’s gentle giants: the endangered Mountain Gorilla. For the majority of visitors, this is the absolute highlight of their Uganda tour.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a must-see for many visitors because it is the home of the gentle giants. On the Rift Valley’s edge, in southwestern Uganda, is the country’s largest national park. In Uganda’s mist-covered hillsides, there are two ancient and biologically diverse tropical rainforests. This forest has been around for more than 25,000 years, and it even survived the last Ice Age (most forests were destroyed). A forest of incredible biodiversity, Bwindi has both mountain gorillas and chimpanzees, making it unique in Africa. Half of the world’s gorilla population lives here, divided into nine habituated family groups. Bwindi is also home to 5 other primate species, 120 mammal species, 220 butterflies, and 360 bird species. This is the place to get up close and personal with critically endangered mountain gorillas for your very own ‘Gorillas in the Mist’ experience.

The gorillas you will see belong to one of nine family groups that can tolerate humans for a short time each day. Your journey will be an exciting (and for some, challenging) journey through forested (and sometimes slippery) slopes, entwined vines, bushes, and bamboo before arriving at the gentle giants. You will be shown previous evidence of gorilla activity along the way. Consider dung, nests, and bamboo shoots that have been chewed. The time it takes to complete the gorilla trek can range from 2 to 7 hours! Once the gorilla best family safari kenya has been located, you will have a maximum of one hour to observe them. Meeting the mountain gorillas is a truly humbling and emotional experience. This is an excellent part of your tour that you will remember for the rest of your life.

Some Frequently Asked Questions

Visa prerequisites and fees
Upon arrival at their port of entry, all tourists must provide a passport. This must be valid for at least 6 months after the end of their intended stay and contain at least two blank pages for entry and departure stamps. Technically, visitors should also have a return or onward ticket, as well as adequate means to pay day-to-day expenses for the duration of their stay, but these requirements are rarely enforced. Most travelers must obtain a visa to enter Kenya. This comprises people from almost every European, Asian, Middle Eastern, North or South American country, as well as Australia and New Zealand. For single-entry tourist stays of up to 90 days, eVisas can be purchased online if purchased at least two days before departure, and visas can also be obtained on arrival. Multiple-entry and non-tourist visas must be obtained from a Kenyan embassy or high commission in another country. Passport holders from some African and Caribbean nations, including South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Malawi, and Zimbabwe, do not need visas for stays of up to 90 days. A tourist visa for East Africa enables multiple entrances into Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda, but not Tanzania or Burundi.
Medical requirements for Kenya
Malaria is the most serious medical concern for Kenyan travelers. It is present in most sections of the country throughout the year, while the danger of transmission is much more serious at low elevations and during the rainy season. There is no vaccination, but several different oral prophylactics are available, and it is important to seek advice from a travel clinic or other adequately competent medical practitioner regarding the choice best suited to your needs. Because no prophylactic is 100% effective, take all reasonable efforts to avoid getting bitten by the nocturnal Anopheles mosquitoes that carry the disease. In the evening, wear a long-sleeved shirt, pants, and socks, and apply DEET-based insect repellent clothing to any exposed body. Always sleep under a mosquito net, or if that isn’t possible, in an air-conditioned room, with a fan, or with a mosquito coil blazing. Malaria usually appears two weeks after being bitten, but it can take months, so if you notice any symptoms after returning home, see a doctor right once and ask to get tested. Travelers with small children or who prefer not to take medicine might consider visiting malaria-free safari destinations in Africa rather than Kenya.
Health care in Kenya

It is strongly advised that you obtain full medical travel insurance, which includes air evacuation from distant places. Be aware that some insurance policies may not cover paragliding or scuba diving, or other dangerous sports, and it may also be null and void in regions subject to travel advisories issued by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office or the US State Department.

On arrival
When you arrive at the airport, our guide will be waiting for you. During the safari, we use specially designed safari vehicles that allow us to have the best possible view of the wildlife. Luggage space is limited in safari vehicles (and small planes). It is therefore advised to travel with light bags, as heavy suitcases would overburden the plane and may be difficult to transport.
Money information
Money can be withdrawn from an ATM in the majority of cities. Travelers Cheques are not generally accepted, and paying by credit card is difficult or impossible outside of cities. The US dollar has typically been the preferred hard money. We recommend that you carry some US dollars with you for everyday costs and tips. Dollar banknotes should not be more than ten years old.
Currency Information
The Kenyan Shilling is the country’s currency. Please check the most recent exchange rates before traveling to your destination. This will be a guideline. Please keep in mind that the exchange rate will be better in larger cities.
AMREF Flying Doctors
We recommend that you apply for a Flying Doctors membership. If necessary, the membership enables a speedy and dependable air evacuation as well as medical assistance. AMREF Flying Doctors provides two covers (Annual and Tourist). You can pick from Maisha Silver (Kenya, Tanzania, and Zanzibar), Maisha Gold (Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi), and Maisha Platinum (Kenya, Tanzania, and Zanzibar) (Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan and Ethiopia). Please visit the AMREF Flying Doctors website for additional information.
Language in Kenya
Kenya’s national language is Kiswahili, but English is widely used and is the primary language in tourist regions.
What Should You Wear in Kenya?
Daytime temps range from pleasant to hot, so pack plenty of light clothing. Evenings are cooler, especially at higher elevations, so bring a few light sweaters with you. Mountain hikers will be exposed to alpine temperatures and should dress appropriately. Remember to pack a hat, sunglasses, and a waterproof jacket. We recommend that you avoid wearing black or dark blue clothing on safari (because they can attract tsetse flies). Walking safaris and hiking safaris Solid walking shoes, and durable clothing are ideal for forest hikes, and if you plan on doing a community walk or visiting the locals, we recommend that you dress appropriately. Women, for example, may wear long skirts and a blouse that conceals their shoulders.
Kenyan Electricity
If you have electrical equipment, we recommend bringing a plug adaptor. Kenya uses a British system. The majority of lodges allow you to charge your batteries.
Driving in Kenya
Driving in Kenya is done on the left. Visitors who are unfamiliar with African roads are encouraged to travel in a 4WD vehicle driven by a knowledgeable driver/guide rather than self-drive, and all of our guides are properly educated in “Defensive Driving.”
Stopover Points
Please keep in mind that washrooms along the road are not always up to European standards, such as squatting toilets, no flushing toilets, or a lack of toilet paper. T.I.A. stands for This Is Africa, as the people say.
Facilities and accommodations
When traveling on a medium to low budget, bathroom facilities and accommodations may be more basic. Keep in mind that water reserves in eco lodges are limited, and in most cases, there are no plugs in the room, but you can always charge your electronics at the reception.
Tipping
Tipping is always graciously accepted. In hotels and restaurants, it is customary to leave a tip of 5-10%. Tipping guides, drivers, and carriers is always appreciated. Indication: USD 1-3 for carriers and USD 5-15 for your driver/guide each day, depending on group size, number of days, and your pleasure.
Need More Information ?
The Lonely Planet and Bradt Travel Guide are the most detailed guidebooks for Kenya. For wildlife, the best guidebook is ‘Watching Wildlife East Africa’ from the Lonely Planet and The Bradt ‘East African Wildlife’. For birding, the best guidebook is ‘birds of East Africa’. It is advisable to get the most updated copy.
