Serengeti National Park
SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park is the world’s largest concentration of migratory game animals. In the Serengeti National Park, nearly 500 species of birds and 35 large plains animals can be found. Many lions live here; this is probably the best place on the continent to see them. Cheetahs are also frequently seen.
Serengeti National Park is derived from Maasai language and means “endless plain.” At 5,700 square miles (14,763 square kilometers), the park is larger than Connecticut. It has an altitude ranging from 3,120 to 6,070 feet (950 to 1,850 meters).
This UNESCO World Heritage Site contains most of the Serengeti ecosystem, along which wildebeest migrate. Additionally, the Serengeti ecosystem includes Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve to the north, and the Loliondo Controlled Area to the northeast. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area borders the southeast; the Maswa Game Reserve borders the southwest; and the Grumeti Reserves and the Ikorongo Controlled Areas border the northwest. Lake Victoria is within 5 miles (8 km) of the Serengeti National Park “Western Corridor.”

Serengeti National Park likely that you will see excellent sightings of lions and cheetahs (and thrilling lion kills) in the Serengeti. Leopards are also regularly seen here. There are also serval cats, golden and black-backed jackals, African wild dog species, and spotted hyena species.
During the Great Migration, millions of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles migrate northward into the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya and then back into the Serengeti plains. As animals move in masse, predators pick off their kills, while the treacherous crossings of the mighty Mara River are the scene of dramatic fights and survival as animals confront strong currents and crocodiles.

African Safari Climate
The Serengeti National Park climate is very pleasant and moderate, despite images that portray Africa as being mostly hot. The temperature rarely gets too hot, and it drops during the night and early in the morning. Seasonal variations affect maximum and minimum temperatures, with the wet season being the warmest. In the sunny months of the year, temperatures rarely rise above 37 °C on a hot afternoon; on a rainy or cold morning, they rarely dip below 13 °C.
From about 15°C near the crater highlands to about 30°C near Lake Victoria, the average daily maximum temperature varies with elevation. Serengeti National Park is a “cool island” within a much warmer climate, owing to its altitude.

Throughout the year, the Serengeti offers the best bird watching, but during November through April, the activity Serengeti National Park is best. Serengeti National Park is not only the time when European and African migratory birds congregate but also when resident species begin to nest. As a result, it is easy to identify birds in their breeding plumage. When it comes to wildlife sightings, the dry season is best, which lasts from June to October.

Local People
Many indigenous tribes live within the Serengeti National Park-Mara ecosystem. Within Kenya, the Kuria people live along the northern border of the Serengeti National Park of Tanzania down to Mugumu. South of Lake Victoria, the Ikoma replace the Kuria, who lived along the Western Corridor boundary. The Ikoma people, who live along the western border of Serengeti National Park, turn southwards to give way to the Sukuma people, a vast group living south along Ndabaka Road. Their livelihoods consist of smallholdings and livestock. The Maasai are the most famous of all local groups.
